QUESTIONS OR PERSONAL EXPLANATIONS BY MEMBERS
Cr J Dowson asked the following questions :

1. Is it true that electricity costs at the SMRC facility are approximately $1.5 million a year?

2. Is it true that SMRC pays approximately $16 a tonne to have the compost produced at the SMRC plant trucked away?

3. What is the:
a) total tonnage of compost produced each year
b) total tonnage of compost sold each year and the price realised
c) total CO2 emissions offset by producing the compost, incorporating the
CO2 emissions from the electricity used to make the compost and other environmental costs involved.

4. What measures are currently being taken by SMRC to avoid further odour issues?

5. Why did the $2.4 million spent in 2007 to fix the odour problems not work?

6. Is it true that there have been breaches of the odour orders issued by DEC in recent weeks?

7. Is it true that SMRC paid approximately $120,000 to lobbyist John Halden’s company for public relations work. Why was John Halden, infamous for tabling a petition in parliament which was followed by Penny Easton’s suicide several days later, and for working recently for North Port Quay, employed using SMRC money and what services have been provided to date?

8. Is there an SMRC councillor remuneration fund with an annual budget of approximately $250,000? What claims have been made against it in the past financial year? What remuneration does the CEO and Chairman of SMRC receive each year and what expenditure have they incurred in the past year?

9. Is it true that SMRC invested $500,000 with Lehman Brothers, with a resultant loss of $475,000?

10. Is it true that SMRC sought to borrow $870,000 to cover losses from last year?

11. Is it true that SMRC is seeking to obtain several million dollars to rectify ongoing odour problems at the SMRC ERRC?

12. Is it true that processing costs for municipal solid waste have risen from $36 per tonne in 2004 to $137 per tonne and are likely to increase to $149 per tonne for 2009-2010?

13. With the burning down of the recycling plant, how will that affect the finances of SMRC in terms of added costs for disposal of rubbish?
