(Ya gotta read this!)
===============================================
Hi all
Temporary Closure for Waste Facility
http://www.cmcoag.com/07%20mar%2026%20smrc%20statement.pdf
IMPORTANT!!!
Now this doesn’t mean that it’s going to be shut for good – far from it. From what we’ve seen so far temporary closures don’t indicate that the odour is going to stop or that we won’t suffer health-wise from the odour any more.
This DOES indicate, however, that the hard work that we’ve put in is having an impact.
AND…that now, more than ever, if you smell the odour LOG IT, LOG IT, LOG IT!
Even though there is a temporary closure the Waste Composting Facility still has it’s contents rotting away. Remember the catastrophe over Christmas where we were bombarded by the odour?

McRae says it’s time for the Recycling plant to close
Residents in Leeming and Willetton should not have to put up with the putrid odour emanating from the SMRC facility any longer.
Riverton MP Tony McRae said that the SMRC has had every opportunity to comply with basic operating conditions and had failed miserably.
“My office has been receiving continuous emails and phone calls from residents across Leeming and Willetton who have put up with the failure of the plant for more than a year,” Mr McRae said.
“This plant is now impacting on the lives of hundreds, possibly thousands of people through its stinking emissions.
“I have been referring the concerns of my constituents to the Department of Environment and Conservation to ensure they were aware of the extent of the plant’s failure.
“The SMRC was closed last year because they weren’t complying with their operating conditions and they were allowed to re-open to prove they had fixed their operations.
“It’s clear the SMRC has failed.
“On nearly every occasion I have visited local residents in Willetton and Leeming over the past 6 months, it has been obvious that the SMRC failed to stop the emission of putrid odours.
“Having a world-class recycling centre is what we all want so that we can reduce household garbage going to landfill and fight climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
“What we don’t need is a second rate, unsustainable and poorly managed stink house.
“There comes a time when we have to say enough is enough and take decisive action and that time has arrived.
“I have written to the Minister for the Environment asking that the Department of Environment and Conservation take action to close the plant permanently,” Mr McRae.

We are pleased that DEC have heard our concerns (DEC receive a copy of your odour logs) and have issued the following media statement and instructions to the SMRC.

For the past 4.5 years the Waste Composting Facility has destroyed the quality of life and air that we breathe. It has gone on for too long!
Just because you’re not getting the odour at your place it doesn’t mean:
a. You’re not breathing it in – airborne chemicals are very difficult to contain and b. That there is no odour. In fact when you’re not getting it, someone else is.
A “written” complaint will make a HUGE impact and we need your support NOW!! To report the odour go to the following page…
ODOUR LOG FORM: (to report the odour)

and.. DEC’s phone number to report the odour via phone:

Let’s keep the hard work up, everyone!
